Overview

How Voxter works

Voxter listens through your microphone, converts speech into text in real time, and adds translation only when you need extra help. All speech recognition, captioning, and translation run on the device to keep your conversations fast and private. An optional Bluetooth button lets you trigger listening and translation without unlocking the screen.

Real-time captions

See what is being said as text on your screen. Ideal for following fast or strongly accented speech without asking people to repeat themselves.

Smart translation mode

Voxter focuses on captions first and adds translation when a phrase is likely to be difficult. This keeps your brain engaged with the original language instead of replacing it completely.

On-device processing

Audio is processed locally on your iPhone. It is not uploaded or stored on external servers. This improves privacy and keeps latency predictable.

Bluetooth button support

Use a compact BLE button to start listening and translation from your pocket. Perfect when you cannot look at the screen during a conversation.

Getting started

Initial setup and first launch

1. Permissions and basic setup

  • Allow microphone access when the system asks for it.
  • Enable Live Activities so captions can appear on the lock screen.
  • Turn on Bluetooth if you plan to use the button accessory.

2. First-time model initialization

On the very first launch Voxter needs to initialize on-device speech models. During this short warm-up:

  • Captions may appear with a noticeable delay for the first phrases.
  • The first translation may take longer than usual.
  • Performance stabilizes after the initial session.

This is expected behavior and happens only during initial setup or after major system changes.

Using Voxter

Core features in daily use

Starting and stopping listening

  • Tap the microphone inside the app to start live captions.
  • Use the Bluetooth button to trigger listening without touching the screen.
  • Tap again or press the button to stop when the conversation ends.

Smart mode and translation

  • In Smart Mode Voxter always shows captions and decides when translation is helpful.
  • If you prefer constant translation, you can switch to a more direct mode in settings.
  • The app gradually adapts to your usage and understanding, focusing more on captions as you grow more confident.

Conversation history

  • Scroll up to review previous phrases during or after the conversation.
  • This is useful if you missed a part of a sentence or want to revisit a specific detail.

Lock screen Live Activity

  • When enabled, Voxter can show “Listening” and recent captions on the lock screen.
  • This is designed for hands-free use when the phone is in your hand or pocket.
  • iOS may pause Live Activity in very low power situations, but captions resume once the device is active again.
Troubleshooting

Common issues and how to fix them

Captions are delayed or appear in bursts
This can happen when the model has just been started, when sentences are very long, or when Low Power Mode is active. Turn off Low Power Mode, keep the app active for a few phrases, and allow the model to warm up. Performance improves within the same session.
The app feels slower after unlocking the phone
When the device wakes from sleep iOS may temporarily limit background processing. Start a new listening session and wait for one or two phrases to let the model fully resume. Restarting the device after major iOS updates can also help.
Live Activity stops showing captions
Check that Live Activities are allowed for Voxter in system settings and that Low Power Mode is turned off. If the system stops the activity, unlock the phone and restart listening from the app or the button.
Bluetooth button does not trigger listening
Make sure Bluetooth is on, the button is paired in iOS settings, and the battery is not empty. If the button stops responding after a reboot or update, unpair it in settings, restart the phone, and pair it again before opening Voxter.
The microphone seems not to work
Check that another app is not using the microphone at the same time, verify microphone access is granted to Voxter in system settings, and close and reopen the app. If the issue persists after a device restart, contact support with your device model and iOS version.
Is my audio sent to any server
No. Voxter performs recognition, captioning, and translation on your device. Audio stays local and is not uploaded or stored on external servers. Only you control what gets shared outside the app.
Best practice

Tips for the best experience

  • Disable Low Power Mode before long conversations that rely on captions.
  • Use wired or wireless headphones in noisy environments so the microphone receives cleaner speech.
  • After large system updates, restart your iPhone before using Voxter intensively.
  • Keep the app updated to the latest version to benefit from performance and model improvements.
Privacy

Privacy and security

Voxter is designed around on-device processing. Audio is captured, processed, and discarded locally. Transcripts are stored only on your device as part of your conversation history. Data is not shared with third parties unless you explicitly export or send it yourself.
